What makes your Kenyan Safari Magical?

Kenya Safari radiates scale and authenticity, its vast, untamed lands offering a dreamt-up version of old world Africa. Road signs warn of crossing elephants, rhinos maraud across isolated airstrips, and cacophonous hippo-honks accompany every night spent sleeping near water. There are enough national parks than major roads, and Safari traffic is genuinely halted by herds of Elephants, Zebras and Wildebeests crossing the way.

Kenya’s immense landscapes may seem fictional, yet they indelibly become real before your eyes. This is an animal kingdom: untouched, unadulterated, and unbelievable until you see it firsthand.

  • AFRICAN SAFARIS OVERVIEW: The Journey (Safari)

This should come as little surprise that the etymology of the word safari comes from Swahili Language which is widely spoken in Eastern Africa. Safari is a direct translation for “journey” or “long journey.” This is a fitting metaphor for thinking of real Africa as a vacation. Considering a safari in terms of must-see sights and check lists reduces it to any other sightseeing vacation, while thinking of it as an immersive journey into a vast unspoiled worldhelps to evoke the inimitably of the experience.

Many new travel experiences can be easy to preconceive, European Cities, the next tropical beach destination, an ancient Asian kingdoms. While the destinations may be foreign, there's enough in the name to picture part of the experience. African safari ignites a whole host of competing images, each struggling for believability. Wildlife documentaries and animated movies help create idealized scenes, but trusting them as markers often seems farfetched.

  • AFRICAN SAFARIS OVERVIEW: The Journey (Safari)

A thousand analogies about untamed animal kingdoms sound evocative, yet what does that really mean? Most of the animals can be found inhabiting zoos all across the world; so is safari that much different? While the remote often unimaginable exoticism of African safari is part of the seduction, it's also a huge part of the inhibition.

Even for the most dedicated safari enthusiasts, safari is both a diverse and all-encompassing term, one that isn't encapsulated in a single moment. Every day brings a thousand new scenes, each one potentially epitomizing the experience, yet simultaneously blending into the overarching impression. For the first time visitors, it’s important to start with the basics. It's easy to recognize that there's a difference between a Lion in a cage and a Lion roaming across iconic bush land. Understanding the difference builds a picture of why African safari is so special.

  • 'Watching the Big Five'

The Big Five: Game drives across Kenya’s national parks and reserves inevitably reveal the spectacular and mighty creatures that make up the ‘Big Five’: buffalo, lion, leopard, elephant and rhinoceros. Early hunters coined this term, after deciding that these species were the most difficult and dangerous to hunt. Today, these five magnificent animals are the cornerstone of an African safari, and in Kenya they are usually relatively easy to find. Given the pervasive poaching of rhinos and elephants, and the alarming decline of Africa’s lion populations, every moment with these creatures is an experience to be savored and treasured.

  • The Masai Mara National Reserve

When asked to imagine an African safari, you’ll probably picture the plains of the Masai Mara without even realizing it. Flat-topped acacia trees dot vast, rolling grasslands covered with thousands of grazing animals. Lions doze in the shade, while zebras nibble at the tall grass just meters away. Enormous herds of Cape buffalo with tiny oxpeckers on their backs watch nonchalantly as safari vehicles slowly drive past, while giraffes take breaks from browsing to pop their heads out of treetops. Driving for hours across this endless, elemental landscape as the sky transforms theatrically above you is truly one of the great African experiences.

  • What makes an African Safari unique?

You must have made a visit to a Zoo. At a zoo, you're on the outside looking in. On a safari, you're on the inside, fully immersed in 360 degrees of drama. A buffalo herd marches past, but turn around and there's a spotted hyena in the grass. Look left and four different antelope species graze on the plains. Watch for ten minutes and then suddenly they scatter. Turn around, and it's only now that the leopard's camouflage is betrayed.

The natural immersion undoubtedly means seeing and hearing more. When the panorama stretches in all directions, the question is not what you can see, but what do you focus on. Wildlife comes from every angle, whether it’s the close-up glimpse of a rhino pair, eagles soaring overhead, or the distant echo of hippo's wheeze-honk.

  • The Great Wildebeest Migration!

The Great Wildebeest Migration: Going hand in hand with the Masai Mara is inevitably the ‘Great Wildebeest Migration’. Heralded as one of the Earth’s most remarkable natural spectacles, this perpetual procession of 1.5 million wildebeest, zebras and antelopes is nearly impossible to describe. As thousands of ungulates nervously trundle across the red sand and ford the crocodile-infested Mara River, the sound of hooves is almost overpowering. When they reach the rolling green hills of the Mara, months are spent feasting on this nourishing grass before returning south to the Serengeti. With the great cats and opportunistic scavengers escorting the herds for the entire duration, the thrills and excitement of this natural phenomenon are positively endless.
